ABOUT COOKIES & POP-UPS

A cookie banner is a pop-up that appears when a visitor comes to a website.

 

Websites use cookies to collect data from visitors. Cookie banners serve two purposes; to let visitors know that their data is being collected and will be used for certain purposes and to get their consent to use the data. All new affordable, low cost websites from Websites by Jane include a pop up.  As an added extra I also offer a Privacy Policy template for you to adapt and use if you so wish.

1. HOW DOES A COOKIE POP-UP WORK?

When a visitor lands on a website, a pop-up appears on the screen, The cookie pop-up tells the visitor that the website uses cookies and asks for consent from them.

2. DO I NEED A COOKIE POP-UP?

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a regulation intended to strengthen and unify data protection for all individuals. Its aim is to protect the fundamental rights to privacy and the protection of personal data. This affects any business or website.

The GDPR, which came into effect in May 2018, also requires cookie banners to be added to all websites.

 

3. WHAT ARE THE GDPR REQUIREMENTS?

You have a duty to show visitors that the website collects data about them.

​

GDPR requires you to have a cookie banner informing website visitors that the site uses cookies, why, how and where their data is used, in an easy to understand way.

​

All low cost, affordable websites from Websites by Jane include a basic privacy policy page, with a basic template, as standard.  This page can be found in the menu on this site.  You may wish to create your own policy, which we will be happy to upload to your site.

4. CLIENT DATA

If requested you must provide your site visitors with a file of their data or delete their data from your database entirely.  This can be downloaded via your admin login.

 

It's important to note that not all data is included in the file and not all data is erased. As a site owner, if you receive a request, it is your responsibility to ensure that you provide your site visitor with all their data and if you receive a delete request, you must ensure that all their data is deleted.
